duty in foreign countries: Local pet transport services: Paid moving companies: Paid air transport: Informational sites: I have found that, if trying to get a dog or cat rescued, these are the best things to do: Take a photo of the animal that can be posted independently to the rescue group sites I will mention below. (In other words, if, when you left click on the picture to find out its 'properties', it does NOT come up as something like 'thumbnail pic', but rather a jpeg that starts with http:/....). Find out how old the animal is, its predominant breed, gender, vaccination status and whether it's been altered. Obviously you may not know all this, but the more info the better. Then include all this information in emails to the rescue group websites that I will mention below. Don't forget to include your contact info for the animal, and if you're posting to a Yahoo group, bear in mind that frequently email addresses will be cut off on the site, so, say, if your name is http://us.mc332.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=johnqpublic@hotmail.com , put as your contact info http://us.mc332.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=johnqpublic@hotmail.com (@hotmail.com) to ensure people can see the whole address. Another option to try is to go to petfinder.org, find Animal Adoption Groups, and look up, first, organizations in the state the animal is located in, the nearer the situation the better. Click on these groups' websites and find out make sure they are no-kill. Then see what the group's requirements are for anyone to adopt their dogs or cats. This must include a home visit, an application and a fee. The rescue groups must require that their dogs or cats be spayed or neutered before adoption. Obviously, the more information you can find about a rescue group, the better. Next, contact the groups that have passed these tests. Explain your situation and ask that, if the organization cannot accept the dog or cat you are worried about, they forward your email to other responsible rescuers. As you go through this list, you will (hopefully) be able to move further away geographically in your search, as transport is not usually impossible to set up if you know the right people (i.e., transport coordinators, which you can usually find at the group sites I will mention below). Also, if you have a breed-specific dog or cat (such as a pit bull, or a siamese cat), look for breed-specific rescues—that's always another option. |
